At Home

Back home in England the rapid spread of the devastating news of Titanic’s sinking hit hard, especially for the City of Southampton. Charlie’s family had heard too but they had no idea whether Charlie or George had survived or not. The daily despair and sleepless nights of not knowing was not only an emotional nightmare for the Andrews family, but for all families who had friends and relatives aboard Titanic. Dreading the worse, Emily had told Charlie’s brother Harry to stay home from school and instead go down to the White Star Offices in Southampton every single day from his home in Millbrook Road, to check on the latest bulletins until there was news, hopefully listing that Charlie and his cousin George were safe. Out of respect, most homes throughout Southampton kept their curtains drawn. The distressing news of the disaster continued to stun thousands of city residents. Shocked beyond absolute disbelief, the people of Southampton were so confused, for they had highly regarded Titanic as being “unsinkable”.

On the day young Harry returned home to his mother with the latest news, the devastating truth hit the Andrews family, whilst relieved to learn that Charlie had survived; the family were also devastated over the sad loss of Charlie’s poor cousin George who drowned. Not even words could explain how Charlie must have felt, having found the position on Titanic for George in the first place.
